Prepare a resale certificate for a distributor

When a distributor asks you to document a sale as a sale for resale, Turtini fills the published blank from the registrations on file and hands you an unsigned draft to review and sign.

To prepare one:
1. Open Resale (/resale) and go to the Tax Certificates tab, Prepare a certificate.
2. Fill in your organization as the buyer (the party who signs) and the distributor as the seller.
3. Choose the state the goods ship to, and the date to prepare for — a registration is checked against that day, not against today.
4. Describe your business and what you are buying for resale. The MTC form requires both.
5. Press "Prepare draft".

You get a card per form. The recommended one is first: where a form has a place designed for the number you hold, it beats one where the number has to sit on another state's line under a handwritten annotation. Each card shows the registration being presented, anything you must write on the form yourself, and anything you must settle before signing.

6. Press "Download unsigned draft" on the form you want.

The PDF opens with a review page listing everything still unsettled — remove that page before you send the signed certificate. The form itself is left editable and the signature, title and date boxes are left blank, so you can correct anything that is wrong and then sign it.

Turtini prepares the values. It does not decide that your sale is exempt, it does not decide which form your distributor will accept, and there is no path through it that signs anything. Read every line before you sign.
