Pasting a recipe from anywhere — AI extracts the structure
You don't have to type a recipe in by hand. Menu Planner has two AI-backed entry points:
**Paste it** — Recipes tab → "Paste a recipe". Paste anything: a website's recipe block, an OCR dump from a phone photo of a cookbook page, a text from a friend, a Reddit comment. The AI extracts the underlying recipe into structured fields:
• Title (title-cased)
• Source (when obvious — "NYT Cooking", a person's name)
• Servings, prep minutes, cook minutes
• Ingredients with quantities, units, and aisle categories (Produce / Dairy / Meat / Pantry / Frozen / Bakery / Other)
• Steps as a numbered list
• Tags ("weeknight", "vegetarian", "kid-friendly")
You review the parsed result before it saves — nothing is auto-written. If the AI got the servings wrong or missed an ingredient, fix it inline before clicking Save.
**Generate it** — Recipes tab → "Compose with AI". Describe what you want in plain English: "quick weeknight pasta my kid will eat, no shellfish" / "low-carb breakfast for 2 that uses what's in a normal fridge" / "Sunday roast for 6 with leftovers for next-day sandwiches." Claude invents a complete recipe with realistic ingredients, achievable steps, and weeknight-friendly time budgets.
Both flows return the same shape, so the same Save → Schedule → Grocery list pipeline works regardless of how the recipe started.
Input limits:
• Paste: up to 20,000 characters of source text. Anything more usually means you're grabbing more than just the recipe (the article around it, comments, etc.) — trim before pasting.
• Compose prompt: up to 4,000 characters. Most users use 50-200 — a single descriptive sentence works fine.
Token cost: each parse/compose call uses Anthropic Claude Haiku tokens and rolls up to your monthly AI usage at the standard +15% chargeback.
