Why each word shows an article and a gender

Every noun in your deck arrives with its article — "la factura", "der Wein", "die Rechnung" — and, where the language shows it, whether the word is masculine, feminine, or neuter.

This is not decoration. In Spanish, French, and German a noun's gender decides its article, its adjective endings, and which pronoun replaces it. Learning "factura" without "la" means learning half the word, and you would have to come back and learn the other half later.

Sometimes the gender is genuinely not knowable from the translation. French collapses both genders to "l'" before a vowel, so "l'huile" could be either. When that happens the card shows the article — which is still what you should say — and simply says nothing about gender, rather than guessing. A wrong gender is worse than a missing one, because you would have to unlearn it.

Where a word came from is shown on the card too, in your own words: the menu item, work order, or recipe the vocabulary was drawn out of.
