Transferring or sharing a gift card
Gift cards are bearer instruments by default — whoever has the code redeems. The transfer flow gives you a structured way to hand a card from one recipient to another with a record of the change of custody.
When to use transfer:
• Buyer purchased for self, then wants to gift it to someone else
• Recipient never set up the original Apple Wallet pass and the email bounced
• Card needs to be split among multiple recipients (e.g. an employee bonus comp split across a team)
Initiating a transfer:
1. Gift Cards → Issued cards → click the card → "Transfer".
2. Enter the new recipient's email + name.
3. Click Send transfer. The system creates a one-time claim link valid for 14 days at /redeem/claim/:transferId.
4. The new recipient claims the card by clicking the link. Once claimed:
• A new Apple Wallet pass is issued to them (the old pass invalidates).
• The card's recipient field updates.
• The audit log records the transfer with both parties' emails + timestamp.
Splitting a card:
A single card can't be split across multiple recipients (the code is the bearer instrument). The cleanest path: cancel the original card, then issue N smaller new cards manually using "Issue card" with the recipients' emails.
Lost cards:
If a recipient lost the email and never set up the Wallet pass: re-send the pass from the row menu. If the recipient also lost their phone with the saved pass: cancel the original (no Stripe refund) and issue a replacement via "Issue card" → comp method, with the same balance.
