Building distribution lists with tags
Distribution lists in Email Campaigns are dynamic — they're driven by the tags you assign to contacts. There's no separate "list" record to maintain; tag a contact "donor", and they're in the Donors list automatically.
How recipient resolution works at send time:
1. The system queries every contact in your org that has any of the campaign's selected tags
2. Anyone on your suppression list (people who unsubscribed previously) is removed
3. Contacts without an email address are skipped
4. Duplicates by email are collapsed (so a person tagged twice only gets one email)
5. The remaining list is sent in batches of 100 via Resend
To target a campaign:
1. Open the campaign composer, click the empty preview area to focus campaign settings
2. In the right inspector under "Recipients (by tag)", click each tag you want to include — multiple tags use OR logic (a contact tagged any of them is included)
3. The line below shows live recipient count, e.g. "47 eligible recipients (excluding 3 unsubscribed)"
To preview the actual list, click "Review & send" — the panel shows the first 5 recipients by name and email, plus the total count.
The Distribution Lists tab gives you a separate view: every tag with its color and contact count, plus any "undefined" tags (legacy free-form tags assigned before a definition existed). It's a quick way to see whether you have enough contacts in a segment before you start writing.
