Rewriting a Doc passage with Wally — selection-scoped AI rewrites
In Builder Docs, the right-side panel is your AI rewrite assistant. Highlight a passage, pick (or type) an instruction, and Wally returns a rewritten version that replaces the selection in place.
How it works:
1. In the editor, select the text you want to rewrite — a sentence, a paragraph, several paragraphs (max ~8,000 characters per call).
2. The right rail shows the selection length and a list of preset instructions tuned for the doc kind. RFI responses surface "Make Section L compliant", "Tighten and reduce", "Add evidence + past performance"; impact reports surface "Lead with outcomes", "Translate jargon for donors"; etc.
3. Click a preset OR type a custom instruction in the text field below ("Make this more direct", "Add a sentence about our SBA 8(a) certification", "Remove all marketing fluff").
4. Hit Run. The status flips to "Rewriting…" while Claude streams. When it's done, the new text replaces your selection. Multi-paragraph responses are split on blank lines and inserted as separate paragraphs.
5. Don't like the result? Cmd/Ctrl+Z undoes the rewrite — your original text comes back.
Per-kind system prompts:
The system prompt Claude sees is keyed off the doc's kind. RFI responses are told to match Section L exactly and lead with capability + evidence; impact reports are told to lead with concrete outcomes (people served, dollars deployed, hours volunteered). You don't have to repeat that context in your instruction — the kind handles it.
Custom instructions:
Anything you can ask a thoughtful editor for, you can ask Wally. Common patterns:
• "Match the tone of the surrounding paragraphs"
• "Reduce by 50% without losing the technical detail"
• "Translate this into plain English a board member could read"
• "Add a sentence about [specific cert / vehicle / past contract]"
• "Reorganize as bullet points"
Source context (advanced):
For RFI responses anchored to an opportunity, Wally can pull the linked record's context (contract vehicle, customer, NAICS) into the rewrite. Set the doc's source linkage when you create it; the rewrite calls then carry that context.
Limits:
• Selection: 8,000 characters max per call. For longer passages, work in chunks.
• Instruction: 500 characters. Tight prompts give better results anyway.
• Mobile: the rewrite panel is desktop-only today (lg+). On phones, plan to draft and rewrite from a laptop.
Costs (transparency):
Each rewrite uses Anthropic Claude tokens. The exact tokens (input + output) roll up to your org's monthly usage at orgs/{orgId}/usage/{yearMonth}.aiTextTokens, billed on the standard +15% chargeback. Most rewrites are well under a cent.
