Digital watch keeping log (replaces the paper deck log)
The Log tab is the digital watch keeping record — the working replacement for the paper deck log SOLAS Regulation V/28 requires every vessel to maintain.
Each entry:
• Timestamp (UTC, immutable once filed)
• Officer of the Watch (auto-stamped from logged-in user with bridge officer role)
• Vessel position (auto-pulled from AIS)
• Course, speed, weather observation
• Free-text remarks — manoeuvres, traffic, drills, anything material to safe navigation
Why digital is fine for SOLAS:
Reg V/28 allows electronic logbooks provided entries are immutable, time-stamped, and retrievable for at least 6 months. Bridge meets all three — entries can never be edited after filing (only superseded with a new entry referencing the original), every entry is server-time-stamped, and the log is exportable as a signed PDF for surveyor review.
Voice entries (Wall mode):
On the wheelhouse Wall, the OOW can say "Wally, log MV pilot embarked off Sandy Hook" and the entry files immediately with the spoken text and current position. No typing while con'ing the ship.
Watch-handover:
At each watch change, the relieving OOW reviews the log entries from the prior watch and signs off. The handover is recorded as a special entry type with both names.
